India is the 7th largest country in the world by area (3.287 million km²) and the most populous country (1.4 billion+ people as of 2023, having surpassed China).


India's geographic extremes:

- Northernmost point: Indira Col (Siachen Glacier), Ladakh

- Southernmost point: Indira Point, Great Nicobar Island (submerged after 2004 tsunami)

India has 28 states and 8 Union Territories (as of 2020, after Ladakh and J&K became UTs in 2019, and Daman & Diu merged with Dadra & Nagar Haveli).

Climate, Soils, and Natural Vegetation

Climate of India: India has a monsoon-type climate. The Southwest Monsoon (June–September) brings 75–90% of India's annual rainfall. The Northeast Monsoon (October–December) brings rain to Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh.


Driest place in India: Leh (Ladakh) — cold desert

Wettest place in India: Mawsynram (Meghalaya) — receives ~11,872 mm rainfall annually, highest in the world. (Cherrapunji/Sohra is second.)
